The axle itself is a solid, metal rod that runs from wheel to wheel and is connected to the trailer frame by the leaf springs. As the trailer moves over bumps and uneven terrain, the leaf springs compress and expand to absorb the shock and keep the trailer level. Torsion axles, on the other hand, use a different mechanism to absorb shock.
